In the post pandemic challenging times, Twenty Arms embraced the opportunity to catalyze change, turning abandoned lands in Sri Lanka into thriving ecosystems. This post explores our journey of collaboration, sustainability, and innovation in the face of adversity.
Embracing the Challenge
We started with a vision to transform crisis into opportunity by rejuvenating abandoned agricultural lands. Our collaboration with local communities has been the cornerstone of this transformative journey.
The Revival of Tradition
Our project focused on cultivating a range of heirloom rice varieties, such as Kuruluthuda and Suwandel, alongside GMO varieties like Samba. This initiative was not just about farming; it was a revival of the local agricultural heritage.
Impact by the Numbers
- Employment Boost: From season one to two, we’ve provided jobs to 283 individuals, improving livelihoods and community resilience.
- Cultivation Success: We’ve successfully cultivated 9.25 acres of land, a significant increase from the initial 4 acres in the first season, showcasing our expanding impact.
- Combating Malnutrition: Direct aid was given to 350 families, focusing on pregnant mothers and children under five, demonstrating our commitment to community health.
- Building Foundations: The construction of a two-bedroom house and the distribution of livestock further exemplify our holistic approach to community development.
Sustainable Practices for a Healthier Planet
Our adherence to using non-GMO seeds and natural fertilizers like Jeewamrutham underlines our commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly farming practices.
The Value of Unity and Innovation
With a project value exceeding CA$ 15,000 (3.5 million LKR), our efforts highlight the significant impact of unity, innovation, and respect for local agricultural heritage. Through these endeavors, we’re not just farming; we’re nurturing a brighter, more sustainable future.
As we continue our journey, Twenty Arms remains dedicated to transforming crises into opportunities for growth, sustainability, and prosperity. Our collaborative efforts have laid the groundwork for a future where agriculture not only feeds but also heals the planet.
